Recently, nearly 55 noncitizen members of the U.S. armed forces along with 17 military spouses were granted USA citizenship by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) at the Yongsan U.S. Army Garrison, Seoul, South Korea. With this naturalization ceremony, USCIS has naturalized 196 military members on the whole this year. USCIS founded the overseas naturalization process in 2004. Since then, this is the first time that USCIS has naturalized 196 members of the U.S. armed forces per year in the Republic of Korea. Thus, USCIS considers this naturalization ceremony as an important achievement in its history.
Robert Looney, USCIS Bangkok District Director, addressed the new citizens of USA before the administration of the Oath of Allegiance. In his address, he stated that this accomplishment was made possible only because of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' readiness to travel to various destinations across South Korea and make arrangements for the naturalization process of U.S. armed forces. Since the year 2004, USCIS has granted USA citizenship to around 961 members of the U.S. armed forces and 134 military spouses in the Republic of Korea.
Robert Looney's address was followed by a speech to the new citizens by U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Kathleen Stephens. According to her the new U.S. citizens have been brought together by their act of service despite the difference in their nationality, which has made their naturalization possible. She further added that this naturalization not only gives them USA citizenship, but also gives them the responsibility of serving and protecting the United States.
Further, an incident about the achievement of a Nigerian family was also quoted by her. She quoted the example of a Nigerian woman who received naturalization last year for her service in the U.S. army. After which her daughter also received naturalization as a military dependent child. This year, the spouse has become the third member in the family to receive USA citizenship in South Korea.
